		If one has the chance to go to Salta, you cannot miss visiting “Plaza 9 de Julio” (9th of July Square)...

If one has the chance to go to Salta, you cannot miss visiting “Plaza 9 de Julio” (9th of July Square). In this place Hernando de Lerma founded the City of Salta in 1582. The houses that surrounded the square are characterized by their porches.

On one side of the square, “Catedral Basílica” (Basilica Cathedral) is placed. This remarkable building was constructed in 1858 and has an outstanding altar completely made of gold. Inside the Cathedral are situated the images of “Señor y Virgen del Milagro” (Lord and Virgin of the Miracle), the patron saints of Salta, together with the mortal remains of General Güemes who was a hero of the independence war. The place where these remains are buried is called “Panteón de las Glorias del Norte” (North Heroes’ Graveyard).

The “Cabildo Histórico” (Historic Town Council) is situated on the other side of the Square opposite to the Cathedral. It was built just before the foundation of the city, and belongs to the “Museo Histórico del Norte” (Historical Museum of the North).

Along Caseros street “Iglesia San Francisco” (San Francisco Church) is observed. Its terracotta walls and its huge tower characterize this church. A few blocks ahead “Convento San Bernardo” (San Bernardo’s Convent) is placed. It is famous for its remarkable hand carved entrance hall that was made by the aborigines in 1762.

This tour would not be completed if the tourist does not visit the colonial mansions of Uriburu, Arias Rengel, Leguizamón and Hernandez. Nowadays, these mansions are considered museums.

Another impressive architectural building is “Mercado Artesanal” (Handicrafts Market) where all kind of handicraft products of different regions of the province can be bought.

Other worth visiting places are “Monumento a Güemes” (Güemes’ Monument), situated at the foot of “Cerro San Bernardo” (San Bernardo’s Hill), and “Monumento 20 de Febrero” (20th of February Monument) in the north of the city.
